Other features
Markings on yarns suggest it was blue piece-dyed, but there is also surface fading and discolouration.
Sewing
Description
Long side has rolled hem, 4mm wide, secured on inner edge by overcast stitches worked Z at c.5mm intervals. Sewing yarn is a pair of S plied cotton yarns. Similar hem down one of short sides. On both hems stitches clearly visible on front of fabric in Z twisted 2 ply. On long hem, stitches barely visible on reverse.
Decoration consists of 4 flowers with bosses of chain stitch surrounded by petals of a single stitch, with a stalk in double running stitch. Diagonal lines in undyed double running stitch emerge from corner.
Flower A: whole flower 13mm across, boss 9mm, c.5 rings of chain stitch. Boss originally blue. Petals originally undyed. Stalk faded blue.
Flower B: whole flower 13mm across, boss 8mm, c.5 rings of chain stitch. All undyed.
Flower C (on edge of cloth): overall diam. 13-14 at least, boss 9mm, c.5 rings of chain stitch. Flower and stalk blue, outer petals undyed.
Flower D: overall diam. 13mm, boss 8mm, 5 rings chain stitch. Undyed. Linked by diagonal line of running stitch to corner of piece.
