FURTHER DETAILS
Borders
Fringe: plaited base 5mm wide. Structure exactly as Bergman B7, in which fringe strands exiting from the web pass over or under 6 similar exiting fringe strands before turning outwards to become a proper fringe at outer edge of plaiting. Each shed of the plait contains 2 pairs of Z twisted yarns i.e. one pair direct from the web and one fringe strand about to exit from the plait as a fringe strand proper. The fringe strands are a pair of S spun yarns, an adjacent pair direct from the web, Z twisted (NB not same as Bergman B7, which has 3 adjacent warps working together, but a pair), Most of fringe strands have been worn off, but original length at least 35mm. No sign of a terminal knot, but cannot be excluded as a possibility. Distance from emergence of strand from web to exit from outer edge of plait c.25mm. Plaiting all worked Z, as in B7. (NB B7 shown as S plaiting.)
Edges
Reinforced selvedge: 3 bundles, outer of 3/ middle of 5/ inner of 4. Selvedge very badly damaged. c.8 mm wide. Type QI 2.
The angle between the plaiting and the reinforced selvedge is obscure and worn, but plaiting seems to go up to the actual corner, across the bottom of the line of 3 bundles, presumably so that the warp in the bundles can be plaited and converted into fringe strands, which appears to be happening (see sketch).
Selvedge type
reinforced
Other features
Weft yarns spaced. Weft l. = length of fringe base.
Notes from the original description
Notably strong twist in system 1.
