Description
Row of bosses/flowers (numbered 1-7 on drawing) at c.20mm from selvedge, parallel to weft, in blue cotton yarn, medium Z plied from 2 S single yarns. The boss centres are constructed in chain stitch, the rays around each with running stitch, worked Z on back. Stems worked with single overlapping running stitches.
Nature of linear ornament elsewhere uncertain, but carried out in two rows of running stitch, each composed of a pair of overlapping running stitches which, where cloth has disappeared, surface as a loosely twisted pair of Z plied blue threads.
Rolled hem survives in part along selvedge, held with row of running stitches on inner edge in Z plied 2 ply S single undyed cotton.
Vestiges of a line of running stitches in 2 ply S single cotton, holding an apparent seam, which secures two pieces of this cloth, continues over the rolled hem, which appears on both sides of it. Seam and hem may have been done together. Both textiles appear to be the same, but uncertain if selvedge applies to smaller portion. In area of bosses 6 and 7. Bosses were probably added after the seam and hem put into place.
