Description
Textile D sewn with ?turned down hem to B. Sewn through to A with thick bundle, Z twisted, of c.18 S single cotton threads, as in A and B.
On side 2 (= front?): four lines of running stitch in Z plied 2 ply S single undyed cotton, c.1mm diam. Does not penetrate to the other side. Pass over junction (=seam) between B and D. Line of blue running stitches, Z plied from 3 S single cotton yarns (see drawing).
Textile C secured to B with rough tacking stitches in undyed 3 ply S single cotton thread.
Side 1: yarn bundle holds A through to perhaps D (see above). Reverse of line of stitches seen on side 2 of B visible between A and B.
Piping: in cord, Z twisted from 3 S plied yarns. S single. The edge of B is hemmed.
Rolled hem, on inside edge visible stitches passing to side 2, where clearer.
On side 2, two lines of stitches are visible, one holding the hem, the other exactly parallel and adjacent, securing the blue piping cord. The cord is formed around these constructional stitches as they emerge from the cloth. There is a one-third turn of the cord in the Z direction between each pass of sewing thread. Each sewing thread holds only one pair of the 3 pairs in the piping cord. Piping cord is 1.8mm thick and survives for a distance of 200mm to centre of amalgam.
Aperture seems to be framed with very rough overstitching. It seems to be about 30mm across and is rectangular in plan so far as it survives. Hems framing it are badly preserved.
