Other features
Weft like this between pile rows 1-2, 2-3, but between 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 and 6-7, one thin and one thick spliced yarn (numbered from surviving patch of plain ground)
Ground (in warp direction): 95mm, then pile row 1; 1-2 is 16 weft shots; 2-3 is 14 shots; 3-4 damaged, but 12; 4-5 14; 5-6 11, 6-7 breaks off.
Pile rows: 4 warp pairs are grouped to be anchor point for each pile unit.
Each pile unit consists of a pair of S plied 2 ply S spliced yarns, wrapped twice round the warp bundle. Longest pile strand now 45mm long. No sign of any linking loops between ends of pile strands.
Considerable irregularity. Sometimes 5 or 6 pairs taken into grouping, sometimes (50%) adjacent warp pairs are eliminated to the back of the fabric. Sometimes individual warp pairs are eliminated from what would have been the centre of the group. Sometimes 2 weft pairs are put into shot immediately before the pile row. All very irregular!
The pile maker had no fixed routine.
