Vindolanda VIN TT/87/337/002-003 [TT/87/337] 2/2 twill z/z
Catalogue number
VIN TT/87/337/002-003 [TT/87/337]
Description
2/2 twill (medium Z/medium Z, 7-8/7-8 per cm, warp/weft not distinguishable) with irregular (but differing) chevron structures in direction of (2) (warp or weft) in 337/001 and 337/002 (fig 00, 00); irregularly repeating weaving faults (floating threads of (2)) in direction of (1) in both fragments and faults in direction of (2) (paired threads and intrusive displacement) in 337/002 (fig 00). Textile, now much degraded, has soft handle and dark brown (?dyed) colour. Fragments very tattered and cannot be fitted together; not clear if/how the two different chevron schemes made up an overall pattern on original textile. Functioned possibly as furnishing fabric? But carelessly woven.
